How to use MakeTape

for the mv3900, add the following to your vax.ini file

attach ts vax.tap where vax.tap can be any valid file name

When accessing the tape file from within VMS

mount msa0: VAX where VAX is the volser of the virtual tape (as specified in MakeTape)

Using TapeMaker
===============

The Source Directories/Files field allows you to enter up to 10 file names or directories
To manually enter information into this form, click twice slowly on the line that you wish
to change, and then enter the data.

A mouse only approach is to select the file or directory that you wish to copy to the VAX in the directory tree (top left) by clicking on it once (in the directory tree). Then move the curser to one of the lines in "Source Directories/Files" and double click. The path to the selected file/directory will be automatically inserted.

If the selected item is a directory, then TapeMaker will search the entire directory (and all subdirectories) for any files whose extension matches one that is in the extension list.

Once all of the files to be copied have been entered and the extension list populated (by a * if no filtering by extension is desired) then specify the name of the vitual tape file (the click on the directory tree/ double click on the data line method can be used). This entry can also be manually entered. If the file doesn't exist it will be created, but the directory must exist.

Enter the Tape Volume Name & User Name.

Specify the Logical Record Length (LRECL) probably 512.

Specify the blocksize (a multiple of the LRECL) 512/1024/2048/4096/8192/16384/32768 are all good

if you have small files don't pick a large blocksize - it wastes too much space on the tape.

Then hit the START button. After the "All Done" message is displayed, additional files can
selected and transferred to tape by hitting the START button.

The STOP button halts the transfer process after the current file has been processed.

The ABORT button halts the transfer immediately and re-initializes the tape.

The INITIALIZE button re-intializes the tape - wiping out anything that has already been done.

The EXITPROC writes a end of tape (EOT) mark on the tape and exits the program.

Notes:
TapeMaker needs write access to the directory where the EXE file resides. It saves an INI file with various configurations there. This file will be automatically created if it doesn't exist.
